Georgia Democrats Attack Georgia Congressman over Obama Comments

Broun has been calling the President-elect a Marxist... and warned he would form a domestic security force like Hitler did.

A Democratic party spokesman calls the comments ridiculous and undignified.

He says Broun is proving to be part of an extremist political fringe.

Of course, that's what Republicans said about Rep. Cynthia McKinney a few years back.

She generated national headlines when she claimed that President Bush may have been in on the 9-11 attacks.

Rep. Broun raised eyebrows with his comments at a civic luncheon.

And he backed them up in an interview with the Associated press.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist dictatorship.

"It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he's the one who proposed this national security force," Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. "I'm just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism."

Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.

"That's exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it's exactly what the Soviet Union did," Broun said. "When he's proposing to have a national security force that's answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he's showing me signs of being Marxist."

Obama's comments about a national security force came during a speech in Colorado in which he called for expanding the nation's foreign service.

"We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set," Obama said in July. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded."

The Obama transition team declined to comment on Broun's remarks. But spokesman Tommy Vietor said Obama was referring in the speech to a proposal for a civilian reserve corps that could handle postwar reconstruction efforts such as rebuilding infrastructure — an idea endorsed by the Bush administration.

Broun said he believes Obama would move to ban gun ownership if he does build a national security force.

Obama has said he respects the Second Amendment right to bear arms and favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault weapons and concealed weapons. As an Illinois state lawmaker, Obama supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on firearms generally.

"We can't be lulled into complacency," Broun said. "You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I'm not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I'm saying is there is the potential of going down that road."

You know the funny thing is that most of the people who claim he is a muslim is just upset that he is an african american who happens to be the president- elect, so in turn you want people to have a extreme predjudice against him. The crazy thing is you people would rather have another 4 years of nonsense than a man who has a sincere hope to change this country for all people. And what does the way a man believes in god have to do with anything as far as running this country or his patriotism. I am a vet who happens to be muslim and I wouldve surely died for my country to protect the rights and liberty of my and I do mean my country. I love my country enough to go into the military with the chance of dying for it in defense of the country I love but half of you cowards would never do anything in defense of the rights you have except for spew racist comments and lies to justify your causes but for now on when you see a servicemen why dont you just say thank you and buy him a cup of coffee instead of using the rights he or she defends with their lives to spew lies and rhetoric which can do nothing but divide us as a people.
with every death or injury to a servicemen it should show you not to take life and liberty for granted as most of you do. Pray for our men and women in the military and may Allah Bless America

I agree that Rep. Broun should hand in his resignation, this country doen't need a racist atitude in public office. God knows there are enough racist people in this country. I certainly don't want one representing me in the state of GA. It's time this country moves forward and let go of the past.

THIS IS SICKENNING... THE MAN HASN'T EVEN OFFICIALLY TAKEN OFFICE YET, AND EVERYBODY IS SAYING HE WILL FAIL... HE WILL BE A COMMUNIST... HE WILL BE PREJUDICE AND TAKE AWAY OUR GUNS... WHY DON'T YOU SIT BACK A WHILE AND SEE WHAT HE ACTUALLY DOES (OR TRIES TO DO) AND GIVE THE MAN A FAIR CHANCE... TRUST IN THE PEOPLE'S DECISION.

BESIDES... THE CONSTITUTION CLEARLY SAYS IF THE GOVERNMENT TRIES TO INFRINGE ON OUR RIGHTS TO BEAR ARMS OR MUFFLE OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH OR THE PRESS; IT IS OUR DUTY (MEANING THE PEOPLE OF THE U.S.) TO OVERTURN THIS GOVERNMENT... NOT NECESSARILY VIOLENTLY... IMPEACH HIM IF HE DOES... HOLD HIM TO TRIAL ON THAT AMENDMENT GUIDELINES... THEN RE-ELECT EVERY OFFICIAL ON CAPITOL HILL THAT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT. Hussein is an Arab name not an islamic name. Islam has nothing to do with being arab. Being muslim and being arab are 2 different things so please get your facts straight before you come to any conclusion that would create a problem with your feelings towards anybody.
