Erlanger Closes Burn Center, Chattanooga Fire Fighters Object
People who suffer serious burns will now have to go Nashville or Augusta, Georgia for long term care.
Erlanger Medical Center shut down its burn unit Monday night.
Chattanooga Fire Fighters Association President Jeff Eldridge says, "The closest one to us is 150 miles 200 miles away."
Fire and burning death are a constant fear for Chattanooga's fire fighters...one made even more real by the closing of Erlanger's Burn Center.
Eldridge says 52 to 55 fire fighters are on duty at any given time in Chattanooga.
He says if one of them gets burned, not having a local burn center makes it hard on their families, "The longer you go without being treated the more (likely) infection or even death could come."
The Medical Center released this statement Wednesday:
"In February 2008, the plastic surgeon who was a burn specialist and medical director of the Erlanger Burn Unit departed for a job in another state. We have been unable to recruit a replacement. After careful consideration and consultation with the local plastic surgeons providing coverage for the unit, Erlanger officials have determined that closing our burn unit is in the best interests of major burn patients. This change does not affect Erlanger’s status as a level 1 Trauma Center.
Burn patients will still be accepted at Erlanger. Those with major burns, especially with burns affecting more than 20 percent of their bodies, will be assessed, stabilized and transferred to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia, or the Vanderbilt Burn Center in Nashville, Tennessee, for long-term treatment. Pediatric burn patients will continue to be transferred to the Shriners Burns Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, as has always been the protocol.
Less severe burns will continue to be treated at Erlanger, with plastic surgeons, trauma specialists, intensivists and other specially-trained professionals supervising their care in an appropriate area of the hospital – an intensive care unit, inpatient room and/or the Erlanger Wound Care Center. All of the employees of the unit have been absorbed into other areas of the hospital. This decision was made with the best interests of our patients as our primary consideration. We will continue to assess the situation."
Former Burn Center Relief Nurse David Thompson says closing the center puts Tennessee Valley burn victims at a disadvantage, "There's only one place that you can get this kind of care and that's at a burn center."
Thompson has been part of Erlanger's Burn Center staff for more than a decade.
He says the Burn Center at Erlanger housed 6 of only 1700 severe burn beds in the country, and closing the unit just doesn't make sense, "It's more than just a devastating loss. This was something that was a feather in the cap of Erlanger."
Now Thompson, a former fire fighter, and the Chattanooga Fire Fighters Association are rallying to re-open the burn center, "We need a commitment from the community, we need a commitment from industry, and we need a commitment from the fire department, everybody involved as to what we can do and maybe we can get the burn unit back up and running, even better hopefully."
The Chattanooga Firefighters Association is asking for your support in the fight to re-open the burn unit.

From what I hear it has
From what I hear it has nothing to do with budget cuts, loss of the director or anything they are reporting to the media. This is not something that just happened. The burn unit has not been accepting new patients for about a month. Erlanger is just telling people whatever can cause the least damage to their reputation. My husband was a patient 20+ years ago and we still keep in contact with the past and present nurses and assistants. What you are being told is nothing but lies. There is a much bigger story to tell and the ones that could tell are fearful of their jobs or getting big paychecks that Erlanger won't disclose. This have everything to do with infections that they could not find the source of in patients that didn't have infections when they came into the burn unit. See if Erlanger knows anything about that. The unit is not just closed it's padlocked.
burn unit
I am very curious to know what you know. We have just been put through 5 months of living hell and in the end lost our loved one. We were lied to and requested that another doctor be called in or him transferrred to another facility and we were told this would not be allowed. He went from being healed and ready to start waking up to dead. We just would like some answers. this was our 2nd trip to the burn unit and we knew it was chaos this time without Dr.Wong PLEASE HELP US IF YOU CAN??
well i think that it is sad
well i think that it is sad because they are so many people all around the area and following counties that need the burn center open for instance my husband works for mohawk industeries and could get really bad burned at any time on the job that he has last year his best friend and co worker got burned so bad that they thought they were gonna have to give them well one of them skin grafics still today he looks real bad we all live in chattooga county + they are so many children and teenagers that need the burn unit and im also speaking for those who do not have email
Why cant they resolve the issue
I have to say this has affected the way that I look at Erlanger now. I run a construction company in Chattanooga and we are always dealing with hot hydraulic fluid hoses. Machine parts, and with dealing with heavy equipment you never know what may happen. I have seen allot of burns come from fluid. As well as burning brush and trees as we clear lots for a new site.I have seen many fires from equipment that over heated and hoses that have busted causing a fire.I understand the risk but just knowing help would be there was a little relief. And I am frightened for the firemen who risk there lives to safe ours in a situation that may get out of control. I do not understand how Erlanger can just shut the down without any notice to anyone. Including the staff that works for the unit. I keep reading that Erlanger has taken this action in the best interest for it patients, but did they ask or even look how it really may affect us? To me if someone was wanting to look out for my best interest I would like to be involved in the conversation. It appears from my end that Erlanger was looking after Erlanger. (Not me, or the firemen, or the community workers, or the family's that may not be able to go to another city or state if their loved ones get burned.)
Even with Medical Coverage what would we do as a family if a burn happened? How could the average person afford to go stay in another State or 150 miles away to be with your loved one who is injured?I do not understand this. I guess to me if there was at least a notice of this. I understand that Erlanger has the right to open and close any unit that it may choose. Who are we to tell them? However for them to be open one day and shut down the next without any notice. Not even to the staff, that does not seem to be in the best interest to me. If they were going to do this for the Chattanooga area to give us better care as they claim. Why did they not address Chattanooga people before an immediate shutdown?

What to Do?
As I read more into this I seem to get a bit upset by the comments of Erlanger. They reply that this is in the best interest of the ones who receive burns. Well In my seat I should be able to comment on what I think.I understand that Erlanger has the right to open or close any unit that choose upon their reasons. However to say it is best for us is not an answer that I am willing to accept. If they were concerned about us why the immediate shutdown?Without even a notice to the Staff at the unit.If they were to say it is in my best interest then they should have given us a notice as well as their employees to see how we really may feel.....
