As many as 130 million people will receive an economic stimulus check in the coming months.
The sudden influx of cash has a few people confused about just who will get what.
For millions of people filing their income tax return this year, the rebate check is in mail -- well, almost.
Dan Boone, IRS Spokesman says, "For them, it's business as usual, file your 2007 tax return let the IRS process it and we can determine from that return if you're eligible for a check or not."
Boone says starting in May, individuals making less than $75,000 a year can expect about $600. Married couples making less than $150,000 will bank $1200, and each child under 17 in your household could score you an extra $300.
But even folks who don't usually file a tax return but make at least 3 thousand dollars a year can get their portion of the pot.
"Social security or veterans benefits, railroad retirement or maybe those who just have a low income and normally don't have to file a return," Boone explains.
Boone says getting in on the stimulus package is easy enough -- with a 1040A form.
Boone instructs, "Fill out the top part of the return, where you put your name, social security number and of course, check your filing status, sign your return, and at the top, write Stimulus Payment, now that clues us in to the fact that you don't normally file a return."
And that could entitle you to a slightly smaller chunk of change.
But if you're on the government's I-O-U list, don't count that money as good as yours just yet.
"If you owe taxes, back child support, back student loans or things like that that are reported to the IRS, the stimulus payment will be offset to go to that," he says.
But if you don't owe any money, it's happy spending to you. At least that's what the government is hoping, anyway.
The rebate check will not affect your tax returns for 2007 or 2008.
You won't be taxed for this money.
But the IRS recommends keeping the documents that come with the check just in case.
Taxpayers can also use the free online filing system to file for a stimulus payment as well.

Listen to this.The IRS says we owed them taxes for 2004,they kept our refund this year,they werent supposed to and they admited that after a bunch of trips to their office.We did rapid refund and now the bank that gave us the money calls us everyday wanting their money(thanks IRS for screwing up our credit)because the IRS didnt pay them.So now the IRS is supposed to give us our money back within 8 weeks,we are supposed to get our stimulas money(they were going to keep that too.)My sons sperm donor owes 20,000 in back child support so we are supposed to get his refund check and his stimulas check also but the child support office has no idea what im talking about.I dont know how one company can know so little about what is going on in our country.It would have been better if they wouldnt have told anyone anything and we would all have been really surprised when we opened our mail boxes or checked our bank statements.I have a head ache now.

Ex's Stimulus Check for Child Support
I called this morning to verify about my ex's federal tax return. They finally intercepted it after 10 years, and he owes nearly 17,000.00. I was so happy - She needs new summer clothes so badly - the IRS lady told me that if I received his Federal, I would definetly be getting his Stimulus if the balance is still over 500.00. My question is, does it come when HIS social security number is up - or mine? In MI we get state tax refund too, so will there be 3 different direct deposits? Or just one big one??? Just curious....its about time!!

So I filed my taxes way before April 15th. I was told that by early May I would recv' up to $600 check from the gov. Now it's May 14th and I have not got anything!!

Stimulus check for Kids under 17
I had my wife added to my ITR for 2007 but she still doesn't have a Social Security number but ITIN number issued by the IRS. I know we are not qualified to receive this Stimulus payment but will that also deprive our kids who has a valid SSS number to receive the $300 each? Had I known that we will not be entitled to this stimulus payment i would have filed my ITR separately.

I was in the same situation
I was in the same situation and called the IRS. Found out I would get a rebate check for an amount smaller than the maximum based on the first filing by direct deposit. In my case the amended return will mean a maximum $1200 rebate so I will receive the difference in a second check by hardcopy since my amended return was filed manually (as is required). At least said the IRS representative I talked to that day.
Rejected tax return?
I just found out the my fed tax return was rejected. My state went threw fine. I filed with turbo tax on march 13 2008 (E-Filed). I just resent it in, the tax ID number was wrong. I fixed the problem. Does that mean we are late and we don't get the rebate??????

I meet all the standard requirements and today (May 14)I still have not received my refund deposit to my checking account! My sister received hers, but both our SSNs put us into the first "batch" that was supposed to be sent. I don't understand, either, and no one has any information.

You will have to wait for a paper check.. just for the fact that you had your fees taken out of your refund. therefore the monies went to a 3rd party bank. The irs website has all that information.. We did ours through hrblock online and had the fees taken our of our refund and we are having to wait for a paper check even though we had our refund direct deposited.

My social ends in #60 and on the Stimulus Payment Status it says I will be receiving a paper check instead of direct deposit. This is due to H & R Block deducting my filing fees from my refund, even though I had the IRS check deposited to my bank account.

Little money.... Who are you? I am getting $3300 I don't know about you but that is not a small amount of money. My husband and I personally make over 150K and $3330 is a matter of groceries or not. We spend $700 a month on groceries $500 on gas and have 5 teenage kids that are not cheap. One Son and One daughter in Iraq that i tend to send packages to often that cost me about $50 a pop just to mail that doesn't include the contents. I am sorry that you think $3300 is a small amount of money but shut your mouth and keep that to yourself. Some people work hard and try to proved greatly for their family and can use every bit of money they can get.

If you think $1,800 (which is what I will be getting) is such little money, then give yours away to people who need it. These blogs are just ways for people to express what they are feeling. And frustrated people that may have question to get answers to those question. For me any money is alot of money! I am a little irritated about this tax stimulus. I filed my taxes in middle of january instead well before this came about. Why should I be penalized even though I used turbotax, have to wait for a papercheck. This to me makes no sense. I think it shouldn't go by last two it should be first come first serve. People wait until the last minute all the time so why should they be able to get their check before an individual files way in advanced. My income in my wife's part time job and my gi bill which i lost for the month because i was in a traffic accident and laid up for two weeks and i had to drop a course. now we are getting evicted from our house because of it. I realize the Lord will help, but this is a little deep.

Filing with Turbo Tax has nothing to do with receiving a paper check. You had to elect on the forms to receive your check direct deposit.
A few years ago I would not have been so eagerly awaiting a $1500 stimulus check, but a few years ago I wasn't paying $400+ per month just to drive to work and spending nearly $1000 per month on groceries. Not to mention car insurance for 2 teenagers, plus college tuition that is slated to go up more than 10% in my state this year alone.
You know what friends of ours did with their refund? They didn't buy new patio furniture or take a trip. Nope. They went to WalMart and bought groceries, clothes for their kids, and school supplies for next year. Unlike past stimulus checks where we might have had the luxury to splurge and buy something fun, these checks for many many people will hold of the 'pending doom' a little longer. And this comes from a married couple making over $100K per year. Imagine families living on half that or even less. Don't be so quick to judge people who are eager to receive some extra relief.
Maybe they should have called them "relief checks" instead of "stimulus checks".

Even if you selected direct deposit for your refund when you used Turbo Tax to file your 2007 taxes, those of us who did so have to wait for a paper check to be mailed. This is because the money from the IRS went through a third party (Santa Barbara Bank). Lame. Please make sure your information is accurate next time.

We are talking about the fact that our due date to receive our rebate has passed and we have seen no payment. We already know when to expect our payment or we would not be asking if anyone else had this problem.

The answer to your question about will they take the money if you owe child support. Yes they will take that money. It just happened to my sister's boyfriend. He got a letter in the mail that told him they took his check. He was a week late getting his payment when they sent him this notice. They will take what you owe and give you the rest of it if there is any left.

they will take the money owed from thr rebate. my ex husband and i filed together since we were married all of last year and divorced after the income tax came back. he recieved a letter telling him that they would take his rebate and how much he owed in back child support. (we have been seperated for a long time) i called child support services and explained the situation and i was told that they will take half of the stimulus payment. i will only get half from the irs but the other half will go toward the back child support so i will eventually get that too. we're supposed to get 900 back. 300 for me, 300 for him and 300 for our son. now i'll only get 450 back. they're taking half of my sons money too.. that sucks......

I think that it is so unfair if they take my rebate check for child support. My entire income tax return of $3,416 was a taken, I am in debt because i was out of work for years due to epilepsy. I finally started working again after struggling with my condition, I have been paying my child support weekly (current and back pay) faithfully for the past 21/2 years. I just feel like it is not fair, I have a medical condition that i was denied disabilty for, but I am still penalized.
My daughter's family earns more income than I do, I need this check for my immediate bills but it is going to a past due debt that I have been paying on. I am the only one working in my house but that does not matter. They live in a 5 bedroom 2 story house, while I'm struggling to keep a roof over the head of my other kids. Not to mention the fact that they will not let me see my daughter (that's a diferent blog though).I think this is not right but I know all of the bitter mothers and fathers who receive support for kids will not see it the way I see it. I need this to provide food and housing for my younger kids, this is really a heartbreaker. I caused an 11 car pile up after having a seizure and this is going to hurt me more. What do I do? I guess the only thing to do is accept it.

I am a single mom with two kids of which live with me, but because of our screwed up court system i have been told that i will not receive any payment for them due to the fact that their dads get to claim them as a dependant even though i support them and they live with me. I do get to claim the earned tax credit i believe thats whats its called but their dads should not get the rebate for them when i have custody and they are with me twelve months out of the year.

It should be stated in yur divorce decree as to who gets to claim the children, if there was no divorce decree, it should have been made clear in the custody papers! Look them over and if it isn't have it revised, you can probably get legal aid.

I read on the IRS website that if you have unpaid student loans you may not receive your full check. My husband and I are current students and dont have to pay back our loans until we are done with school. Does that mean we will get our check or not?

Wrong Name associated with SS?
Has anyone received a letter from IRS stating they would not receive their stimulus check because of invalid name associated with their SS#. I kept my maiden name 12 years ago and always file the same way every year using my married name after my maiden name. Does anyone happen or know how to get this straight? I work full time and pay into SS - Can the Social Security office fix this or am I just out my money?

The IRS did my taxes but I made a mistake to have my rebate check mailed directly to me. I filled in February and my last digits are 47. I am wondering when I will receive it by mail as I am in my upper seventies on a low fixed income and need this money to help pay my rising bills?

I know that if you get claimed, you are not eligible for the check - is this true even if I have filed my own separate tax return for my job? I have two children, ages 19 & 21. They are dependents, because they are both college students. And, even though they have part-time jobs, and file their own returns, they will not get $600. And, even though I declare them as dependents, I won't get $300 each for them either, because they are over 17. So, it seems there is a big hole in this process -- for kids between the ages of 17-21. As long as they are considered a dependent of anyone, they get nothing. Yet, they are likely very expensive at that age (unlike young children), especially if they are going to college.

nope see i am 20, have been living on my own since 18, have my own apartment, work 2 jobs, have to pay my own bills, file my own taxes, the only reasons I bother my parents are when my dad and I are fixing up our cars together, you know father-son automobile time, man and machine, yeah good times, I bust my ass making sure I can make it on my own, because I do not like having someone over my shoulder telling me what the hell to do, I could have had it made you know getting driven where I need to go and want to go, a reduced feed roof over my head since i wouldnt be livin for free in my parents house and all the good mom's cooking i could ask for, but nope I decided screw to hell with that, i want my own privacy and space, and I got it, and my parents have no rights in claiming me as a dependent, i received my income tax refund, i received my own rebate check...sorry buddy but that's what you gotta live with..

got second letter totally confused now!
ok , filed tax return using tax act. no fees involved. refund direct DD us treasury in feb. ok exspected 1500 on may 9th, ss# 75 .got that 2nd letter today states may 9th payment DD, the letter came today may 10th but it's dated may 12th??? and we wonder why thing are screwed up!
the back of this letter shows the right amount due but then says reviewed" your payment is delayed due to being reviewed"
does any one know if this is because I amended my refund ? has anyone got a letter stateing reviewed ?
had to pay back 7.00 dollars afyer amending. IRS cashed the check april 14th.I don't get it. letter also say's on the front page if you don't recieve you money in 6 weeks call, but on the back it says if you don't recieve payment or an letter of exsplaination letter in 60 days call?????????? is the payment paper or DD and WHEN ??????

Will I still recieve my rebate? I was scheduled to recieve mine on May 9th, via direct Deposit; but recieved $0.

it says i should get my rebate by the 16th of may since both of my returns were derect deposit and today is the 15th of may and i still havent received it so am i gonna get one or os it gonna be late?
