But it's the unique way of getting her story out that's turning heads.
18-year-old Brittany Phillips was murdered 3 and a half years ago in Oklahoma. But after spending time trying to find Brittany's killer locally, mom Maggie Zingman, set out on a now 20 state journey, in what she's calling a Caravan To Catch A Killer.
October 1st 2004. Tulsa, Oklahoma. Maggie Zingman gets a knock at her door. "They just really quickly told me to call Tulsa police , your daugther's been murdered." 18-year-old Brittany Phillips had been raped and suffocated inside her 2nd floor apartment. Zingman adds, "It's a day I don't think any parent hopes to experience and I never expected I would of." Police found DNA left at the scene but still do not have suspect. In an effort to keep Brittney's case fresh, Zingman took her fight to the streets armed with her SUV. Her latest stop, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Zingman finds, "Chattanooga is one the line of some major highways. You have 75 that goes to the Southern most part of Florida all the way up North and it's crisscrossed with 24 which becomes 40." Zingman gets noticed just about everywhere she goes. The brightly colored car is plastered with Brittney's pictures and information on the case. To two bikers passing by, Zingman tells them, "Actually I'm at about mile 3600...this is actually on my turnaround...This happened in Tulsa Oklahoma about 3 1/2 years ago." Passerby Stephen Mays adds, "This actually doesn't surprise me as much as it impresses me." Zingman is fighting not only to find Brittney's killer but to change rape laws and improve DNA databases. Zingman says, "My daughter was buried on her 19-th birthday. She was a child, my child and the adult laws didn't protect her." Looking at her picture on the side of the SUV, Zingman adds, "Those eyes would just stare at you. I miss her, I really do."
