A Bradley County couple fights back during a home invasion. They weren't hurt, but it led to the arrest of three men. It happened last week at a home in Cleveland. In a News 12 exclusive, the two victims tell us about the trauma of being attacked in their own home.
It was close to midnight on November 4th when Bradley County Sheriff's Deputies respond to a 911 call at a home on Pea Street. "My wife heard somebody and the dog was barking at the front door," Veney told News 12. Veney says he then cracked the door a few inches and was met by three men...22-year-old Mikel Hutto. 20-year-old Christoper Csicsak and 30-year-old Abraham Rios. "It was all three of them in on us like that (snaps) I couldn't even think," Veney said. Two men went after Veney while one grabbed his wife, Victoria Russell. "One boy had me against the wall right here. We was locked up fighting. Another boy pulls out a bat and the other one broke free and grabbed her. When he pulled the bat out of his leg or out of his jacket and he went to swing. I pulled the other boy in front of me as he swung the bat. He swung for a home run . I pulled the other boy's head in front of him and he about knocked him out," Veney recalled. "I ran out this door [the back door]. I had it locked. I came out here. I ran straight back here and I was hollaring. Before I got out of the trailer I was screaming 'somebody help me, call 911!'" Russell added. Veney was also able to break free and the three suspects ran from his home. Sheriff's deputies soon located Hutto and Csicsak at a local hospital. Hutto was being treated for the head injury he suffered when he was hit by the bat. Rios was picked up the next day. Investigators say it was an attempted robbery. But Veney and Russell think they were specifically targeted and they don't know why. "I ain't done nothing to deserve this. I want them arrested for attempted murder. They tried to kill me," Veney said. Both say this incident makes them think twice. They've now posted these signs and they bought a gun for protection. "Don't open your door to someone..especially that late at night. If you have to dial 9-1-1 and tell them you think someone is in trouble," Rissell added.
All three men are charged with attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary and criminal conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery. Hutto and Rios are also charged with aggravated assault. At last check all the men were still in the Bradley County jail.
