I'm tiered...
We already know the outcome of this case: the videos will be reviewed, the defendant will be seen as disturbing the peace, (but at a question forum are there never any disturbing questions?), then he will be shown resisting arrest, but arrest for what? Why was Ander Meyer taken from the mic in the first place? I cant help but to feel torn between wanting to stand up and fight authority and wanting to calm Mr. Meyer down when i see these videos. Even though the law states that one must not resist arrest, how else is one to react when they already fear the government? I mean think about it, a college student has the opportunity to ask a potential leader of our country questions, that if answered could alter our future (Kerry not being elected President) and even open the eyes of America that we can still question our government. When the declaration of independence was written, our Forefathers were of the people, "We the people," But now the president is portrayed as a celebrity. The news reports that he is traveling to Texas for vacation, or that he nearly choked on a pretzel, but nothing about the bill he just signed that allows the police to monitor whatever they want (obviously this is just an example). So what are we, the people, going to do? What can we do. I am one of many that desire for our government to be questioned, but I am just like Mr. Meyer, I’m a college student with nothing but apathetic views on our government. I have no hope for our Mr. President’s ability to govern this country accordingly because there are too many dynamics of this society, and the media is the most capable of changing the world. But they aren’t doing anything either because of who knows why. It isn’t biased to ask the president if he is corrupt. It isn’t biased to ask him if he has cheated in some way. Asking questions only gets to the truth. And we should never fear either asking questions or the truth. I no longer want to be a fearful American only sure that if everything else fails I can turn the TV on and there will be a broadcast.
I digress; Andrew Meyer will be charged guilty of disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. But it shouldn’t be because he made some people upset and he wouldn’t stay calm; it should be because he tried to get the crowd worked up and intentionally wanted to scuffle with an officer. He posed questions that were not of some people’s liking which got other’s attention and then he was arrested for doing so, as far as I can tell from the footage. Unfortunately the subjectivity will be taken away from this case and simply the “facts” will be presented, but I hope not. I just hope that the media will one day realize that they hold the moral fabric of the world in their hands; with great power comes great responcibility.
