It's a growing problem in America, especially among young people. We're talking about prescription drug abuse.
In a survey last year, one in 5 people 12 and older reported taking a prescription drug for non-medical reasons at least once in their lives. Reasons include getting high, losing weight and building muscle. The most commonly abused drugs are stimulants, depressants and pain killers. While taking the drugs as prescribed can be helpful, the problem is there's a serious risk of addiction. Prescription drug abuse can also lead to health problems like irregular heartbeats, seizures, breathing problems and personality changes along with wrecks and other physical injuries.
And studies show most abusers steal prescription drugs from parents or friends. So keep a close eye on your prescription drugs. Stay safe and healthy.
