School's in full swing but it's not too late to protect your kids against a potentially deadly virus. We're not talking about the flu, though a flu shot is a good idea too.
We're talking about bacterial meningitis. It's when a bacteria or fungus causes the membranes and fluids in the brain and spinal cord to become inflamed. It spreads easily from person to person so pre teens, adolescents and college freshmen who live in dorms are at higher risk. Doctors recommend kids get the meningitis vaccine at their 11 to 12 year old out check up. If they miss it then, it's not too late to get it. Young people should definitely get one right before going to college.
Bacterial meningitis can lead to some serious long-term consequences... from losing a limb to hearing problems and even death for one quarter of kids. Stay safe and healthy.
