Health News: STD Website Controversy

Comments Below: 3

VideoAn Oregon man's website has some folks fired up.

It "outs" people in the state and around the country who reportedly have incurable, sexually transmitted diseases.

Anne Yeager Reports.

I ended up sleeping with her she didn't tell me until afterwards that she had herpes for over a year.

CYRUS SULLIVAN IS THE TYPE OF GUY--YOU EITHER LOVE OR YOU HATE.

THAT'S BECAUSE AFTER CONTRACTING HERPES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON---HE PUT THE GIRL WHO *HE CLAIMS INFECTED HIM----PICTURE AND ALL---ON A WEBSITE.

It was an awful situation, and I started thinking well what can I do to prevent this from happening to somebody else.

HE PUT THE WEBSITE ONLINE A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO--ONLY SIX people ARE FROM OREGON AND WASHINGTON.

MOST OF THE NAMES ARE STARS---ATHLETES---AND PORN STARS.

INFORMATION HE PICKED UP ON WIKIPEDIA...

IT'S THE SPIRIT OF THE SITE---THAT HAS PROFESSOR TOMAZ GOMEZ UPSET.

What's its whole objective? It's to out people who are inflicted with certain
conditions or as the website calls it, incurable sexually transmitted diseases.

AND BESIDES---HE SAYS IT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO POST RUMORS--NO OVERSIGHT... NO VERIFICATION... NO DOCUMENTATION NEEDED.

Anyone can post information I mean you and I can post a report.

THAT INCLUDES A SCORNED LOVER, AN EX-BOYFREND, A JILTED FRIEND.

But what if you're on the website and it isn't true?

Well it's incumbent on *you to get your name taken off.  In fact, they want you to hand over medical records to get your name off the site.

If you submit a clean bill of health, like go ahead and submit to me incredibly private information like blood tests.

THE WEBSITE HAS ITS SUPPORTERS.

I think it's an awesome...if you have an issue you should probably take.....you about it.

I think don't think it's good for people not to tell their partner that they
have something that could be spread.

THERE ARE OTHERS WHO DON'T LIKE IT.

That's awful.  Nobody wants an STD; you shouldn't have to have people know you have that.

It sounds kind of inflammatory. How so?  Telling someone to stay away from somebody else because of a disease that they might have.

CYRUS SULLIVAN LIVES WITH IT EVERYDAY.

Having to shell out co-pays every month on valtrex---that sucks.

HE DEFENDS HIS WEBSITE---SAYING HE'S DOING A PUBLIC SERVICE.

If somebody's going around infecting people with incurable diseases maybe they deserve to be embarrassed for it.
