Georgia Showdown in the Senate Between Saxby Chambliss and Jim Martin

| | | | | |

Chambliss vs. Martin

Just a couple of months ago.. Senator Saxby Chambliss was coasting in the polls to retain his seat.

But the Credit Crisis changed all that.. And now it's turned into a nasty.. Toss-up race.

WDEF News12's Amy Katcher joins us now from Rossville with a campaign preview.

This is an important race because democrats have picked up enough Senate seats nationally to pull within striking distance of a filibuster-proof 60-member majority.

You really can't tell what's at stake by looking at the signs behind me: Only local races reign here in Rossville.

(Change ad) We need change, change, change here in Washington.

(Martin) In this election you have a simple choice.

The ads for republican Saxby Chambliss and democrat Jim Martin are hard to miss. But for many voters, their message is.

(Jesse Williams) I don't know much about it really. I think the country is just in such bad shape nothing's going to help it much.

North Georgia voters we talked to just aren't watching this race closely.

(Stacey Wooten) Uh, not as much as the presidential but I am.

(Amy stand-up) We couldn't find many Martin or Chambliss signs here in Catoosa County and neither campaign was able to direct us to anyone to talk to north of Atlanta.

(Williams) He's not trying too hard.

(Wooten) Well it's unusual that you don't see anybody but we're not.

Both the Chambliss and Martin campaigns made one stop apiece in Dalton in October. But neither candidate focused their efforts any further north. That means some voters may base their decision on advertisement sound-bites like this.

(emma) And he's mighty good to his momma. I want to say that, too.

Or this:

(baseball ad) Strike three. Saxby economics. With three strikes he ought to be out.

 Well that's just plain offensive.

(Williams) Well he should get out and let people know what he stands for, what he wants to do.
