Playing for Palmer

The GPS soccer team lost one of it's own earlier this year to cancer, but her family and teammates continue to play in her honor.
Playing for Palmer encourages kids to learn soccer and the program teamed up with Girls Inc. this week to help fight obesity.
WDEF News 12's Mandy Odom has more.
Mary Woody Griffin says, "I think she would have loved it. I mean sports and kids, two of her favorite things. Just as they are combined to help kids. It's great."
Palmer Griffin lost her battle with leukemia last March, but her memory lives on.
Playing for Palmer is an international program gives out soccer balls to kids run through World Vision.
This week Palmer's GPS coach, five teammates, and her sister volunteered their time to help teach the Girls Inc. Camp basic soccer skills.
Coach Will Kesler says, "What we wanted to do was to provide something locally that was in that same idea, and Palmer's the type of person that she would have been the first one to volunteer for this kind of camp and would have just loved it."
Kesler says it was a perfect fit to partner Playing for Palmer with Girls Inc.
He says it was the first time many of the girls had been exposed to soccer.
10-year-old Summer Thomas says, "The favorite things I've learned is juggling, how to pass the ball, and scoring."
8-year-old Skylar Davis says, "I get to kick the ball a lot, because it gives you more exercise."
Girls Inc. hopes to encourage girls to do just that, exercise, but Palmer's sister had another reason to help.
"Because I love her, and I think it's a great cause to help all these kids learn," Griffin says.

All the girls will receive a Playing for Palmer soccer ball donated by Front Runner Athletics.
Organizers hope the girls will use the ball to practice with and stay active.
