Caught on Tape: Incredible Tornado Video
Submitted by Collins Parker on June 4, 2008 - 10:14am. BONUS VideoWe saw an incredible outbreak of tornadoes over the Memorial Day weekend.
The most deadly was in Iowa on May 25th, but we didn't get any video of the actual twister.
That is until now.
The First State Bank in Parkersburg, Iowa has released video from their surveillance cameras that shows the impact of an EF-5 tornado, the strongest they get.
First, we get the video from inside the bank. You can see the wind churn the inside before the front of the building collapses. Luckily, no one was in the bank at the time.
This was actually a glancing blow. The tornado passed directly over a house across the
street from the bank. And that's where the drive through camera was pointing. You can see a home turn into kindling right before your eyes (as long as the camera lasts). The destruction begins when the roof from another building slams into the house.
Overall, this tornado killed seven people, injured dozens more, and destroyed hundreds of homes in three Iowa towns.
It was the strongest to hit the state in 32 years. And that's saying something in Iowa.
Brian Smith has more on this tornado and our unusual tornado season so far in his blog.
