Nightfall Preview: J.J. Grey and Mofro
Nightfall quite often saves their best show of the year for the 4th of July weekend.
That should prove true again this year.
J. J. Grey and Mofro is probably the highest profile artist on the schedule this year.
Grey and the band emerged from northern Florida at the turn of the century.
They're big festival draws.. playing the first Bonnaroo and just about every other major festival in the country since.
They play a bluesy, roots music mix.
The group graduated from a regional act to national status in 2007 when they were signed to Alligator Records.
I've got several examples here of their varied musical approach.
First, the title track from their current album, Orange Blossoms. This catchy song would have sounded great on the radio.
Here is the soulful Lochloosa, a Mofro standard, at this year's Crawfish Festival.
And from last month, a Rolling Stone cover at the Wakarusa festival.
Expect a large and enthusiastic crowd for this show.
J. J. Grey and Mofro take the Miller Plaza stage at 8:00 Friday night.
