Celebrities WE Care About: Deborah Norville, JR Martinez, Bernie Mac, Randy Owen & the 50 Cent Connection
Dalton native Deborah Norville matches wits with 5th graders tonight.
The host of Inside Edition tries out a game show when she appears on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" Friday night on Fox.
Norville readily admits she wasn't.. at least on this show.
But she did win some money for her favorite charity.
She played for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in New York.
Her husband is on the board.
The whole experience got Norville thinking about her 5th grade days back at City Park Elementary.
Read what she has to say about those days in her blog and take a look at her 5th grade picture.
From MTVWe just lost our local contestant in the latest reality show from MTV.
50 Cent: The Money and the Power is like The Apprentice, but replacing Donald Trump with rapper 50 Cent.
It's a contest of business sense vs street smarts.
From MTVOne of the 14 cast members is 21 year old Nathan Strickland from Calhoun, Georgia.
He's a real go-getter, beginning college at 15 and already running his own business.
But Nathan got an early ejection after a run-in with 50 Cent.
You can see the episode at MTV's website.
From ABCDalton native JR Martinez has a gig playing an Iraq War veteran on the Soap All My Children.
He plays Brot Monroe, a soldier whose fiance thinks was killed in the war.
But he's really recovering from severe burns.
The creators of the show wanted an authentic feel, so they cast a real War vet.
Martinez, of course, fits the bill.
He was in Iraq.
In 2003, his Humvee hit a land mine.
Martinez was burned over 40% of his body and needed 32 surgeries to recover.
He still wears those scars on his face for all the audience to see.
The Brot character only existed off screen, until the executive producer decided he wanted the real thing to bring the character to life.
So JR got his break for a special story line the week of Veterans day.
You can read more about Martinez and see what fans are saying about him at the All My Children website.
Soul MenYou would assume that Chattanooga's connection to the new movie "Soul Men" in Riverside's own Samuel L. Jackson.
In this road comedy, Jackson got to check off two items on his wish list.
He lived out his fantasy of being a Temptation.
And he finally got to perform with his old golfing buddy, Bernie Mac.
Of Course, the production got plenty of unwanted attention when both Mac and Issac Hayes died after shooting had concluded.
Here is Jackson talking about the movie and Bernie.
But the surprising Chattanooga connection to this movie comes at the very end.
Stay through the credits and you'll see a tribute to Bernie Mac.
It includes interviews with him from the set and clips of him warming up the audience for the final performance scene at the end of the movie.
When he's talking to the audience, Mac pays tributes to the fans who have supported him.
And he gives a shout out to Chattanooga!
Who knew?
Longtime Mac fans are going to love him in this movie, but I warn you... it's not a family picture (extreme language).
Randy Owens first solo album debuts this week on the Billboard country album charts.
One on One debuts at #14... a good start.
But his single hasn't fared as well... stalling around #40.
Here is an interview Owen did about his solo career this week at the CMA's.
Randy also did his first book signing last week.
He signed copies of his new autobiography "Born Country" at the Sam's Warehouse.
He was greeted with a line out the door.
Randy says he stayed three hours just to get a chance to talk to everyone.
