5/20/08 Hurricanes Could Become Fewer, But More Intense.

Hurricane Season kicks off June 1st and this year, according to researchers at Colorado State, suggest an active year. Dr. William Grey and Dr. Philip Klotzbach are predicting 15 named storms. Of those, 8 will be Hurricanes, 4 of which will be “intense”.

We’ll see. I don’t typically hold much faith in these, there are just too many variables. The National Hurricane Center will release there latest “guess” soon.

Released yesterday was a finding that we could have less hurricanes but the trend of more intense hurricanes could continue.

Findings disagree with the suggesting that global warming will lead to more hurricanes: “This new study suggests that in the Atlantic basin, global warming from increasing greenhouse gases will have little impact, or perhaps cause some decrease, in tropical storm and hurricane numbers.”

The study does find that with the “possible” cyclical trend of warmer Atlantic sea surface temperatures, hurricanes could become more intense.

Full report here.

Nevertheless, it only takes 1 hurricane to make landfall and cause tremendous heartache. Numbers are just numbers in this case. Every year there is always a chance.

See you soon,

Brian
