Next week, nearly 40 of your favorite Chattanooga restaurants will ask customers to pay one dollar for a glass of tap water, something that's normally free. It's not a money grab. It's an effort to raise awareness and funds for clean drinking water. For every dollar raised, UNICEF will provide clean drinking water to a child in a third world country for 40 days. According to UNICEF, Water-related diseases are the second largest killer fo children under the age of 5. These restaurants will be participating:Blue Orleans Creole Restaurant

We are a third world

We are a third world country. Ever been to East Lake or Piney Woods? Start by making sure ALL the people in Chattanooga have clean drinking water first. I know of 2 people who don't have water at all in the home. One runs a garden hose from his neighbor, with permission. Then ALL the people in TN. Hear about the sewage in the well water on the mountain? We need to clean up this country before we go help another.

Bad timing

Whether or not this is a good cause is beside the point. It seems these restaurants are jumping on a bandwagon that most won't participate in. If they want to have a fishbowl on the bar to donate to the cause for those that feel like it, that's one thing. But making it mandatory makes me want to take my money elsewhere. It reminds me of our new president saying we all need to pay our fair share of taxes and he gets to decide how the money gets spent. I wonder how long these establishments will continue doing this when it impacts their business? Maybe I'll just set up to collect a dollar from every person that walks by my business and breathes the air. Then I could contribute a portion of the money to buy carbon offset credits! Let's see how everyone would like that. Get a life people.

I will not go to any of these restaurants ever. If they want to give money let them, I will choose where my money goes.

You probably wouldn't go to these restaurants anyway. It's a good cause and it's something that Cracker Barrel or those chain places wouldn't do....giving to those who need help.

How would you know where I will go eat. Good cause, not in my book we have enough problems here in America. What did you give last year, I gave over 8,000$? People like you comment on other people and don't have a clue about anything! Pathetic.

Door Charge or Freedom
Submitted by Mike (not verified) on March 20, 2009 - 2:16pm.
Why not have a door charge to get inside? Say like $50.00 to get in the door and the owner of the establishment can donate to who they want to for whatever cause they deem necessary.
What happened to freedom of choice in a resturant? We can't smoke because somebody says it is unhealthy. If it is so unhealthy why not ban smoking all together? Would the answer to that be the taxes?
Wearing seat belts was the insurance companies idea. So they took that freedom. And now some jerk wants a dollar for a glass of tap water. Well for my part I hope they get an enema with my glass full.

To Jennifer Smith, I'm not a spoiled little brat nor selfish. I'm all about helping people in need, but I don't think the restaurants will be getting my $1. As much money that I would be paying for my food, water should be free. If I'm paying $1 for water, I might as well buy a drink instead. I will just avoid going to these restuarant period. Don't try and use some innocent cause from a third world country to try and justify the reasoning behind this mess. We have people here in our own city that are living like they are in a third world country, help them out! Also, most of these restuarants are in the downtown area and plenty of homeless people live down there, why not help them out????????? Please people!!

i think that is a good thing and if you can afford to eat at the restaruant then you can give a dollar to a thirsty little boy or girl and if not you are just a selfish little spoiled brat
and you need to look at this way if you or your child was thirsty you would be so grateful that they thought of you and i think UNICEF has a great idea and they should kep on going so everyone next time you are eating at on of these places give a dollar for a thirsty little girl or boy

$1 for Drinking Water
Submitted by Ann (not verified) on March 19, 2009 - 9:44am.
Wonderful as this fund raiser appears to be, my $1 will stay in my pocket. Seven years in a third world country provided me opportunities to observe and know employees of the United Nations. UNICEF is one of those divisions. I saw a tremendous amount of waste of our taxpayers funds. But you don't have to live in a third world country to know these facts. Published audits of the United Nations entities say as much, and their director called our country a "DEADBEAT NATION" in the national news last week. The organizations that were making incredible changes in these countries then and now are your NGO's or Non-Government Organizations.

I think this is a great idea and will go for an excellent cause, but just curious if this is permanent or if this is just for next week? Anyone know . . .

If people can still afford eat at these places, they can afford to pay a buck to help out a poor thirsty child. I just hope unicef is as honest as they say they are. I know that most of the money collected for the less fortunate, goes toward staff payroll and other operating expenses. Good move though, a kind gesture, to say the least.

If I'm going to spend my money to help a poor thirsty child, I'll bloody well do it for one on MY country. The UNB can kiss my hairy white butt before I give them so much as a penny. We have thousands of kids in THIS country who need your help. Why not help ourselves before we go helping eveyone else?!

Not mandatory and only temporary
Just a point of clarification, the restaurants "ask" if you want to donate. They don't make you. It's like when you go to Wal-mart and they ask if you want to donate $1 to the Children's Miracle Network. You have the right to say no. Also, they're doing this for World Water Week, which ends Saturday... so they will stop "asking" for a donation for water after that point.
