Saturday's Predicted Snow Totals In The Chattanooga, Tennessee Valley Region

How many of us have gone to the movies because the trailer was great, only to go and watch a flop! What a waist of 20 bucks… A few of yesterday’s models looked great for snow (trailer), but it looks like the event will get two thumbs down.

Heavy snow will fall close to home, with the better chances south. Below you will find our FUTURECAST snow totals. Right now, from around a Ft. Payne, AL to Dalton to Murphy, NC line and south could see a couple of inches with areas north including Chattanooga up to an inch, which might be pushing it. Further north, a few flurries. Look for snow showers to begin just before sunrise. As artic air moves in the afternoon, moisture will be squeezed out possibly giving us a better chance of snow before ending late afternoon.

Overnight forecast model data has come together for a track that is just a bit too far south. The greatest amount of snow locally would be in the higher elevations in west NC and in northeast GA where the moutains will enchace the activity. There will be a 50-75 mile wide area of heavier snow that could be as far south as a Birmingham to Atlanta line and as far north as a Gadsden to Rome to Dahlonega, GA line. In that area, snowfall totals could reach 2-5”…if we keep the rain away.

Travel troubles? Should be minor for us. Heading south could be a different story. Road temperatures on the interstates will be above freezing and most of the snow would melt on contact, but when the snow becomes moderate to heavy by mid to late morning, slick conditions could prevail. If you are traveling to Birmingham or Atlanta, keep it tuned to the forecast.

Wet roadways could freeze tomorrow area wide with lows in the TEENS! Do keep this in mind.

Sorry kids of all ages. I wanted it too. At least we will see some.  More updates to come.

See you soon,

Brian

maybe next year...but i doubt it

for you snoe lovers, looks like our chance of snow this winter is over. so put up your sled's (i don't know why they even sell them here) and get ready for summer and spring. Winter doesn't exist in the tennessee valley. You literally have to go further south to get snow. this past weekend made me change my mind on wanting to become a meteorologist. My nieces are dissappointed because they havent had snow to play in since they were born and the oldest one is 12. I think i will move to colorado or some place that actually gets snow when it is predicted. Maybe next year snow lovers, but I highly doubt it. They predicted 2 snows and we already had them( if you consider a dusting as a snow).

Good morning

Please, please, whatever you do, do not let one “blown” forecast change your mind. The type of weekend storm we had is one of the more difficult ones to predict. It happens. It will happen again.  I sure hope you change your mind. Meteorology is not an exact science. You have to remember, forecasting is predicting the future, but through technology and good ole instinct, predictions have become more accurate. When you become a Met, who knows what kind of technology will be available. So many things have changed in the last 10 or so years I have been forecasting. It is still amazing to me that we can see weather patterns weeks in advance just by a click of the mouse!  While the weather will do what it wants, the latest tools continue to save more and more lives. That matters to me the most.  And the added bonus. Weather is FACINATING!

Brian

I am using instinct.

If I become a meteorologist, i will use instinct and not computers. Look at how wrong they have been this year. I do stil wana move though for other reasons than the weather. Jobs are hoard to come by here too, so that one reason. I agree weather is fascinating but not fun to predict when the same thing happens every time. It happened agin last weekend and what happened exactly opposite of what they forecasted... the pineapple express is alwyas too far south for the tennessee valley. We ahve to get our storms from arizona and the west. the pineapple express favors snow in georgia, alabam and even louisiana and florida. shreveport, louisians has already had more snow this year than we ahve all winter. weird...anyway, it seem sthat yall do have more "accurate" models but they seems to be more wrong..thats weird..

Hey that is better than nothing

My kids were giddy to play in the flakes that fell in Dalton Wednesday night. If we manage to get an inch that will be around for a few hours for play time Saturday morning we are good to go!
I am not a big fan of snow myself but I would love for my kids to experience one big one while they are young enough to really enjoy it.

I was giddy too

And I was dissapointed too. Not the storm for us. We still have Feb. and March to go, which can be better snow chances for us.
