Most of the Vols star players from last year are gone, as well as several assistant coaches.
That should make for a busy head coach, as Butch Jones opens his fifth spring practice Tuesday on Rocky Top.
Teams don’t rack up wins and losses in the spring, but that doesn’t take away the value of spring practice according to Butch Jones.
Said Jones:”Spring football is paramount to the development of your football team from a mind set to a work ethic stand point from your standards to your expectations and toughness. If you have to wait unitl August camp to build your toughness as a football team, then you’re in trouble.”
Even though Tennessee has a lot of injuries on the defensive line, toughness will not take a back seat this spring.
Said Jones:”We can not compromise our physicality as a football team nor will we this spring. That is vital that we become a much more physical football team and a much more explosive football team.”
Jones says spring football is an open job market.
Said Jones:”There is no depth chart. We have an organizational chart, and all that organizational chart means is who will take the first rep in practice and go from there.”
The quarterback race will get the spotlight as the Vols look to replace Josh Dobbs.
Said Jones:”From a quarterback perspective, it’s consistency. Consistency in performance every single day. Never being too high. Never being too low. Individuals who can manage our offense. Get us into the appropriate plays. The leadership.”
One of the Vols new coaches this spring that Jones has been high on is strength and conditioning coach Rock Gullickson.
Said Jones:”Rock Gullickson has made a monumental difference in our football program.”
The goals this spring for Tennessee are pretty simple.
Said Jones:”We’ve really challenged our players in three areas. Details, accountability, and toughness.”
