The voice of the Titans Mike Keith stopped in Chattanooga on Tuesday, and he gave us the low down on Tennessee this off-season.
The Titans are beefing up a roster they hope will finally put the team back in the playoffs for the first time since the 2008 season.
The Titans have been active so far in free agency, even signing special teams guys like Brynden Traywick and Atlanta kick returner Eric Weems.
Said Keith:”Eric Weems is a very exciting pick-up for the Tennessee Titans because not only is he a great kick return man and punt return man, he also covers kicks.”
Secondary was a big need, and the Titans have already plugged some holes with Logan Ryan and Jonathan Cyprien.
Said Keith:”We add Jonathan Cyprien a safety from the Jacksonville Jaguars. 6-feet, 223 pounds. Big hitter who has averaged over 100 tackles per season. Logan Ryan. A real ball-hawk. Thirteen interceptions in his career, and ironically, led the Patriots in tackles this season.”
One big name on the free agent market is Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower, who is from the Nashville area.
But Keith doesn’t foresee him returning home.
Said Keith:”He has not visited us. There is no visit lined up for him at this point. Would be a little bit of a surprise if he were to join our team because he essentially plays the same position that Avery Williamson does.”
Maybe the Titans don’t need to splurge on a guy like Hightower with two first round draft picks.
Said Keith:”That’s going to be one of the exciting things about the first round because the Titans have so much collateral to use with pick number five and pick number 18.”
Quarterback Marcus Mariota broke his leg at the end of last year, but he should be ready by next season.
Said Keith:”Marcus Mariota is in Eugene, Oregon, back at the University of Oregon. rehabbing that broken bone in his leg. He can now put some weight on it. He’s able to do more things. He’s coming right along. He’ll be ready for the start of training camp.”
After going 9-7 last year, its’ the playoffs or bust in 20-17.
Said Keith:”The arrow is ticking back up for the Tennessee Titans, and we’re all excited because we all believe it’s time.”
